Data might be stored in forms of text, picture or audio in main media channels including papers or other electronic media such as computers, phones, hard disks, tapes, CD and USB.

Therefore, every process needs to be designed to determine a person who would be able to access and the storage format. And, the unused data also need to be destroyed safely. Because the importance of data management is to not only help the data to be used more efficiently, but also to increase confidence that important information will not leak into the public.

Data Remanence is the residual representation of digital data that remains even after attempts have been made to remove or erase the data. This residue may result from data being left intact by a nominal file deletion operation, by reformatting of storage media that does not remove data previously written to the media, or through physical properties of the storage media that allow previously written data to be recovered. Data remanence may make inadvertent disclosure of sensitive information possible should the storage media be released into an uncontrolled environment (e.g., thrown in the trash or lost).

Data sanitization: Data sanitization is the disciplined process of deliberately, permanently and irreversibly removing or destroying the data stored on a memory device to make it unrecoverable. A device that has been sanitized has no usable residual data, and even with the assistance of advanced forensic tools, the data will not ever be recovered.

Various techniques have been developed to counter data remanence. These techniques are classified as clearing, purging/sanitizing, or destruction. Specific methods include overwriting, degaussing, encryption, and media destruction.
